No one should get an allergic reaction from a hairstyle. Founded by two environmental scientists, LAB’s vision is experiences that delight instead of damage. LAB began in a fiber lab at the University of Michigan, where our first plant-based braiding hair prototypes were made.
Through years of research and development with multiple collaborators and even prototyping in the founders’ basements during the COVID-19 quarantine, LAB came to life.

We are located in Chicago, IL. Our storefront is open for online order pickup and events.
How do I schedule pickup at the LAB Shop?
Select pickup at checkout. After checkout, you will receive an email to schedule a pickup time at our storefront.
What is LAB braiding hair made out of?
Our braiding hair is made of a corn derived fiber.
Can I wear this hair if I am allergic to corn?
We recommend consulting with a dermatologist if you have concerns about a particular allergy.
How do I seal LAB braiding hair?
Our hair seals with braiding gel and steam. See here for a tutorial video.
Will the color fade off?
Our fibers are color fast and do not leach dyes.
How many bundles do I need?
Our customers average 2-5 bundles per style. Check out our Braid Styles highlight on Instagram for examples of bundles used for different styles.
How long before I receive my order?
Orders ship within a week from purchase. If a significant delay is expected, you will receive an email. Please book hair appointments after receiving a tracking number.
